Although monkfish is a white fish, its liver possesses properties similar to those of fatty fish, offering an important source of vitamins and minerals for our pets. Curiosities from science

While Canumi products are not offered by us (nor by the manufacturing company) for any therapeutic purposes, there are several studies regarding the benefits of EPA and DHA, in which fatty fish like sardines and mackerel, as well as green-lipped mussels, are particularly rich, along with larger fish like salmon and tuna and some white fish such as monkfish. Among these studies, the most interesting is a 2021 study (a review of previous studies—of which 20 studies on dogs and 3 on cats were found eligible—available at this link) which discusses the benefits found for canine allergic dermatitis, coat condition, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, valvular heart disease, and canine and feline osteoarthritis. Dogs diagnosed with chronic heart failure and lymphoma, and cats with allergic dermatitis, also seem to benefit from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, but the study clarifies the need for further studies with better methodological quality to strengthen this evidence.

Another interesting 2016 study (available at this link) evaluated mercury concentration levels in wet and dry fish-based foods, finding levels generally lower than the reference threshold for humans. The study was prompted by the fact that it is in fish (particularly large fish such as salmon and tuna) where there is a risk of mercury accumulation, and the desire to verify whether this can be a risk factor if the animal is destined to eat the same food every day for long periods of time. However, it also stressed the need for further research on the subject.
